The Italian Institute of Technology (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia) known as IIT is one of the youngest but most respected research centers in Italy. The Italian Institute of Technology was founded in 1964 to promote research, innovation, and education in science, technology, and society. It was also recognized for its high-quality education. In total, the center employs around 1,700 employees of various backgrounds and ethnicities from more than 60 countries.
Genoa is located in Italy, a country with more than half a million inhabitants. The location of the city is very special in that it is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea and the Apennine Mountains. Note that the University of Genoa has more than 40,000 enrolled students (both undergraduate and graduate). IIT is not the only research center in the city.

One Ph.D. fellow position will be available from April 1, 2023, in the non-coding RNA and RNA-based Therapeutics Research Line.
Project name: Dissection of cellular signaling pathways during the regeneration of the planarian nervous system
Background: The group is interested in the study of the nervous system from the point of view of functional developmental genomics. In this particular context, we have developed a broad toolkit for genetic and pharmacological manipulation of planar signaling and gathered preliminary evidence for the role of specific extracellular cues in regulating brain regeneration.
Description: The selected Ph.D. student will work on a project focused on the characterization of various aspects of cell signaling during the regeneration of the nervous system. The project will focus mainly on the evolutionary role of selected extracellular signaling pathways and their known and new molecular effectors. For this purpose, we will perform in vivo experiments on the regenerating flatworm Schmidtea Mediterranea (planaria). In parallel, we will use in vitro differentiation of mammalian stem cells as a neurogenesis model for biochemical studies.
Necessary expertise:
i. Graduate in cellular, developmental or molecular biology, neurobiology, genomics, biotechnology or a related field
ii. Strong background in developmental biology
iii. Previous experience with experimental molecular biology tools Basic set of molecular biology tools (PCR, cloning, in vitro transcription)
iv. Some experience with developmental model organisms (e.g. Xenopus, D.rerio, Drosophila)
Required expertise:
v. Working experience with non-canonical developmental model organisms (e.g. Planaria, etc.)
vi. More advanced experimental skills are required for classical and molecular embryology studies (e.g. in situ hybridization, surgical micromanipulation, and microinjection)
vii. Previous, demonstrable experience with genomic and transcriptomic techniques Knowledge of genomic and transcriptomic techniques
viii. Previous, demonstrable signal path manipulation experience Knowledge of signal path manipulation.

From October 1, 2022, one doctoral study place will be available in the research line of integrated nuclear architecture, which will be led by its principal investigator Irene Falabella.
Project title: Structural plasticity of the genome: tools for single-cell spatial genomic analysis and quantification
Background: Spatial genomics techniques (Bintu, Mateo, et al. 2018, Nir, Falabella, et al. 2018, Szabo, Jost, et al. 2018, Finn, Pegoraro, et al. 2019, Su, Zheng, et al. 2020, Takei, Yun et al. et al. 2020) allow direct visualization of multiple genomic loci in the nuclear compartment, allowing the investigation of chromatin fiber properties over a range of length scales (from kilobases to several megabases in length) of a single cell at a time. However, in addition to direct visualization of the 3D genome at different scales and resolutions, there is a need for standardized ad-hoc quantitative analysis methods and methods for integrating spatial genomics data with other genomic information to elucidate genome-to-genome relationships. structural plasticity and function of the genome.
Description: We are looking for a motivated Ph.D. student with enthusiasm for the development and implementation of tools for investigating single-cell genome structure at the nanoscale. Our research uses a hybrid method (computational and experimental) integrating imaging techniques such as seq-OligoSTORM (Nir, Farabella et al. 2018), genomic data, structural bioinformatics, and physical theory to determine the 3D structures of the genome, which will contribute to the complete characterization of regulatory circuits genome. The successful candidate will participate in the design, development, and implementation of computational tools for spatial genomic analysis and modeling. The candidate will work and collaborate closely with other researchers in the Farabella lab as well as members of other research groups within CHT.
Necessary expertise:
i. Genetics/biology/bioinformatics/theoretical physics or closely related fields
ii. Good knowledge of Python
iii. Introduction to 3D biomolecules
iv. Knowledge of Unix/Linux operating system
Required expertise:
i. Introduction to imaging technologies, processing, and analysis
ii. Familiarity with genomic data.
iii. Knowledge of machine learning, statistics, and optimization.
iv. Knowledge of molecular modeling tools.
