Title: Using health behavior change to improve the physical health outcomes of young people experiencing first-episode psychosis:
Academic background: Sciences, Health Sciences
Host Campus: Wellington
Qualifications: Ph.D., Master’s
Department: Psychological Medicine (Wellington)
Summary:
People living with psychosis die at a much younger age than the general population, primarily due to poor cardiometabolic health. The effects of medication are implicated in these outcomes, positive health behaviors such as regular physical activity, good nutrition, and abstinence from smoking and other substances can help to mitigate risks to physical health.
Early intervention is crucial before physical health deteriorates to the point it becomes irreversible and behavioral patterns are still amenable to change. Therefore, we are aiming to support young people who are experiencing their first episode of psychosis to lead healthy lives. This project may draw upon, among other things, co-design, motivational theory, aspects of nutrition and exercise prescription, pharmacology, and psychiatry to develop programs alongside these young people. Therefore, it is suitable for a wide range of master’s and doctoral level students.
This project has not yet been funded, so you will need to work with your research team to prepare a scholarship application.
Title: Thematic analysis of factors attributed to recovery amongst staff enrolled in the Air New Zealand Alcohol and Other Drug Programme:
Academic background: Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities
Host Campus: Dunedin
Qualifications: Master’s
Department: Medicine (Wellington)
Summary:
This OHEC ethically approved the study, using a qualitative approach, which aims to establish hypotheses explaining the high success rates of a substance use disorder (SUD) program among service users of the Air New Zealand Alcohol and Other Drugs Program (ANZAODP). Master PhD and Research Positions at University of Otago
As a backdrop, in 2017 Air New Zealand conducted an analysis of the rehabilitation outcomes of employees registered with the ANZAODP. Master PhD and Research Positions at University of OtagoThey have demonstrated very high cure rates similar to alcohol and another drug (AOD) programs associated with other airlines in the United States, and a similar program for physicians (subject to licensing processes). licenses and similar regulations). However, recovery rates for these programs are significantly higher than for standard non-job-related AOD treatment programs. Master PhD and Research Positions at University of Otago
To date, there have been few studies of AOD treatment programs relevant to the airline industry and no studies have sought input from registered personnel. A study of work-related programs for clinicians found that participants’ overall satisfaction with the program and a positive response to the clinical environment were associated with recovery. Recovery was also associated with participants’ perceived level of social support, and expert opinion indicated that a combination of psychopathology, treatment, support, and punishment was key. To date, no studies have been published that analyzed specific themes within the employment program that participants assessed and contributed to us being successful in achieving recovery.
