- Graduate (MSc) Student Position in the Phan Lab: Genetic Constraints on Memory University of Alberta co-op Jobs
Deadline: Open Until filled
Research Focus:
Learning and memory are the basic processes by which information is encoded, stored and retrieved from the nervous system. Decades of research have revealed the hundreds of genes organisms need to successfully learn and remember. However, the genes behind the coin, which contradict the limitation of learning and memory processes, are surprisingly little known and unstudied.
The long-term goals of the Fan Lab are:
Identify new genes and different cellular pathways that suppress memory processes.
Use powerful and adaptable Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) model organisms to explore why such cognitive impairments are necessary. The Phan lab uses Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, along with multilevel laboratory approaches ranging from animal behavior, neuroanatomy, molecular biology techniques, super-resolution microscopy, and in vivo functional imaging techniques to study neuronal function in live Drosophila.
They are currently identifying and tracking genes that limit the number of synaptic vesicles in dopaminergic neurons.

- Title: Graduate student with Dr. Jessica Yue: CNS regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism (University of Alberta co-op Jobs)
Deadline: Open Until filled
Summary:
Dr. Jessica Yue is currently looking for hard-working graduate students interested in diabetes and obesity research.
Research projects will focus on how the brain regulates whole-body glucose and lipid metabolism. The research will involve methods in physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. In addition to standard laboratory techniques, trainees will receive training to independently perform sophisticated surgeries and in vivo experiments to measure glucose and lipid production.
- Title: Graduate Student position with Dr. David Bennett: Spinal cord research (University of Alberta co-op Jobs)
Deadline: Open Until filled
Summary:
The lab of Dr. Bennett examines the spinal cord after injury with the aim of understanding and improving motor function recovery after spinal cord injury. His group used human and animal models of spinal cord injury to investigate changes in the channels and receptors of neurons that control the muscles below the injury and optogenetic and pharmacological methods to compensate for the loss of damaged neurons and connections. This finding is directly applicable to the restoration of motor function and the treatment of unwanted spasticity in people after spinal cord injury.
